why does this GIF have so many notes?

yet when WE, ie DEAF PEOPLE post things about how awesome we are no one pays attention. im sick of people only paying attention when hearing people speak about Deaf people. 

LISTEN TO US. THE DEAF PEOPLE. 

and why are we cool?? im sorry. but im cool becuse im a cool person. NOT BECAUSE im Deaf. i just happen to be a cool person who is Deaf.

AND all three signs in this GIF are wrong.

the sign for Deaf is not poking yourself in the face like that, its a verticle finger going from the ear to the mouth or vice versa, representing “cant hear, cant speak” 

the sign for people, your fingers are pointing out between the pointer and the middle finger. the middle finger should rest on the thumb, not poke out like that. if i could show you how it looks inappropriate i would. (imagine the letter “P” for people, it represents two legs, but you have your thumb sticking out in between the two legs, what does it look like?? THINK ABOUT IT.)

Look, This is tumblr. don’t take it so seriously. This girl was just having fun.

^and I don’t know about you but I sign cool like she does. I sign Apple with an A twisting it like that instead of my index finger.

and honestly, just be glad that someone out there that likes our culture. She was just having fun and with people saying things like that, it would just turn people away from Deaf people. Don’t be so closed minded. She was having fun and she did a good job signing it and making this GIF. Yes?

thats how you sign cool? really? i have never seen that before. i have always seen the cool sign on the face as a pinched “g” handshape not the “x” handshape, and that it doesnt touch the face and is next to the mouth,. where as apple is more on the cheek/jaw line and is touching the face, i have seen apple as either “a” or “x” handshape.

as for the cool aspect, im tired of deaf people being seen as a commodity.

if i made a GIF just like this that said, Black People are Cool

people would be up in arms against me.

i have much respect for hearing people involved in the Deaf community and i have many really great hearing friends. 

but i dont like being something “cool” just becuse im deaf.

im a person.

and the fact that this got SO MANY notes but when we say we are cool nothing happens, really bothers me. 

why do people listen to hearing people when they support us, but not when we speak for ourselves?

I can vouch for that being an alternative for cool. A growing number of the Deaf, HoH, and Hearing population are using that as cool. It is a newer sign that younger people tend to use.

That’s the sign I learned, too. Maybe it’s a regional thing? No idea.

we learned that and the 5 handshape at the bottom of the chest, wiggly fingers?  i can make a little video later?  i was told they were gendered- one at teh mouth/jaw is feminine and at the chest is masculine?

Never heard of the gendered “cool” sign. I’ve used the wiggly 5 handshape at the chest for “cool/awesome” and often the pinched G handshape near mouth for “cool/neat”
